Why the Learner Passport?
Efforts to better help young people transition to post-school pathways through a Learner Passport, a Portrait of a Graduate, or similar model, is fast gaining traction globally. Unlike singular score-based assessments, the Learner Passport enables an expanded definition of student success, spanning core academic knowledge and skills, as well as a range of other competencies gained through formal, informal and non-formal education that are critical across education, employment, and life.
Particularly for marginalised groups, the Learner Passport promotes equity and social mobility, creating a more even playing field for success. The Learner Passport enables recognition of learners’s skills and helps them optimise their strengths through:
- Recognition of their experience and achievements and ability to contribute their own evidence
- Helping them to reflect, curate, set goals and make plans to transition to further education or employment
Stakeholder Benefits
- A holistic view of their skills and strengths in one place, promoting self-reflection and a more comprehensive representation of their abilities
- Supports and helps with setting goals, planning and taking action
- The means to select and share evidence to obtain support, get a job or enrolled into a course
- Enjoy greater personal agency and control over their learning and career journey through enhanced ability to assemble specific material that tells their story
- Enable learners to collect, curate and share credentials through the Learner Passport while learners are undertaking study
- Gain transparency and visibility of individual learner and comparative cohort progress
- Use the Learner Passport as a tool to motivate learners and guide them in their future education and employment choices
- Understand and connect the industry skills taught in a curriculum and visibility of skill attainment across the cohort or the institution
- Businesses can save time and make accurate recruitment decisions if young people are better able to develop, translate and communicate their skills and strengths
- A growing, self-sustaining ecosystem of businesses, education providers and community groups that contribute validated evidence of skills and strengths to their Learner Passports
Who is the Learner Passport For?
School districts, Departments of Education, secondary schools, government authorities and business and community groups (among others) will be interested in the Learner Passport for the education and employment support it provides to the next generation of workers.
The Learner Passport is typically introduced to the learner while they are enrolled in secondary school. They start to develop their learner agency by collecting digital credentials and building out their portfolio and profile.
Once they graduate, learners retain ownership and control over their Learner Passport and can continue to build upon it throughout their career.
As the nature and availability of jobs shifts and changes, the Learner Passport can enable and support lifelong learning, helping to map and plan the work and study opportunities that align with their interests and career pathways, contributing to long-term equity and success.
